I always tell people at work, that the first job in testing software is not to figure out what it's supposed to do, nor figure out how it can work better or faster.
The first job in testing software is to discover what it's actually doing.
Turns out, my testing mentor came up with that one years ago :)
"Of course another way to describe testing is that it’s finding out what actually is as opposed to what’s supposed to be."
