Quote of the day - 06-29-2012

Paul Krugman -

"So the law that the Supreme Court upheld is an act of human decency that is also fiscally responsible. It’s not perfect, by a long shot — it is, after all, originally a Republican plan, devised long ago as a way to forestall the obvious alternative of extending Medicare to cover everyone. As a result, it’s an awkward hybrid of public and private insurance that isn’t the way anyone would have designed a system from scratch. And there will be a long struggle to make it better, just as there was for Social Security. (Bring back the public option!) But it’s still a big step toward a better — and by that I mean morally better — society. "

Wow - talk about an embarassing product failure.

Seriously, I can't make this shit up.

Hand sanitizer recalled for bacteria

Sanitizer may pose health risk to people with weakened immune systems

Kleenex-brand Luxury Foam Hand Sanitizer is under recall because of microbial contamination.

Health Canada said Thursday that product tests by manufacturer Kimberly-Clark Professional Corporation detected bacteria that may pose health risks to people with weakened immune systems, especially those with cystic fibrosis.

Overheard on a bus - 06-27-2012.

Belated edition.

Repeat performance from the McDonald's employee.

Her mother is a liar - she claimed she only starting stripping when she was nine months pregnant. Apparently the clubs liked her because of her red hair and big chest.

She herself is selfless - as she never let's anyone know what's going on in her life.

P.S. Though it didn't happen on the bus, as she got off she continued her ranting on her LG phone to the caller, and proceeded to walk through a red light and almost get hit by a bus. Got to hand it to her - she didn't appear to miss a beat in her rant.

The might of Monsanto and their Frankenfood force-feeding of America.

Yes. It wins again -

Monsanto Trumps Food Safety and Democracy (Again).

"In a move heralded by food advocates, Sanders introduced amendment 2310 on June 14 this year, after his own state legislature backed out of voting on the popular bill, H.722, also known as the Vermont Right to Know Genetically Engineered Food Act.

Vermont lawmakers allowed the bill to stall – and ultimately die – in the Vermont House Agriculture Committee in April, after a representative from biotech giant, Monsanto, threatened to sue the state if the bill passed.

Significantly, the Senate vote, 73-26, did not fall along partisan lines, with 28 Democrats voting against the Sanders Amendment."

Quote of the day - 06-20-2012

"This is what is best called governmental and personal negligence. Bush laughably - in a tragic sort of way - once conceded that if he had known that terrorists had planned hijacking planes into the Trade Center specifically, they might have done something to prevent it. But the mainstream corporate media failed to challenge him on the notion that he failed to issue any security measure to prevent hijackings, in general, which could have prevented the horrible debacle."

Or another way of putting - 120 people who fuck up the planet on behalf of the American Establishment.

Wonder if there's a way to tie this to the ALEC list? I called the ALEC list the backbone of the American Establishment. Perhaps this is the public face?

Wonder what the inner workings are like?

Militarism, a failed movement, and the co-opting of a once great organization

http://consortiumnews.com/2012/06/18/amnestys-shilling-for-us-wars/

Think it's not all part of a larger strategy?

The Money Quote -

"The Road to Hell

Nossel’s and Albright’s theories are flawed in many ways but suffice it to say that democracies are actually not less prone to war. A long list of “democracies” – including Nazi Germany, the Roman Empire, the United Kingdom, France and the United States itself – disprove this assertion.

In any event, the U.S. has been terribly hypocritical in its support of “democracies” in foreign countries, often toppling or attempting to topple them (i.e. Iran’s Mossadeqh, Guatemala’s Arbenz, Chile’s Allende) in order to gain easier control of a foreign country through an allied dictatorship.

No one is going to argue that the goals of humanitarianism, preventing atrocities and furthering women’s rights around the world are not “good and necessary” (in the words of the CIA strategic communications expert). We would go so far as to say these ARE truly noble causes!

Testimonials about human rights’ abuse are often true and fundamentalist regimes’ treatment of women seems to vary only in degrees of horrible. But while it’s true that many women lack rights in Afghanistan, some would argue that it’s conveniently true. And that the best lies are always based on a certain amount of truth.

The devil, however, lies in the details of promoting equality and accomplishing humanitarianism. Most importantly the ends, even noble ends, never justify wrongful means. "

Exactly - it's nothing more than just glorified PR.

Completely ignored by the US Media ...

... gee, I wonder why?

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/based+actress+Nina+Rhodes+Hughes+speaks+Robert+Kennedy+assassination/6570188/story.html
(h/t to WhoWhatWhy)

"The lawyer says the testimony of Rhodes-Hughes, a B.C.-based actress who has, until recently, lived in virtual anonymity on Bowen Island, may be pivotal in winning a new trial for his client, Sirhan Sirhan, Kennedy’s convicted assassin.

On Feb. 22, 2012, Pepper filed a petition for a new trial on behalf of Sirhan in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles. Pepper is arguing there was a second gunman, that fraudulent evidence was presented at trial, and that key witness reports, like that of Rhodes-Hughes, had been altered or ignored.

Pepper’s court filing also is built on analysis of an enhanced audio recording of the assassination, made by Montreal Gazette reporter Stanislaw Pruszynski, that surfaced in 2007.

Pruszynski had his tape recorder running throughout the assassination, but didn’t realize it until many years later. The enhanced recording, according to forensic acoustic expert Philip Van Praag, identifies 12 to 13 distinct shots being fired.

“Sirhan’s gun only held eight bullets,” says Pepper. “The tape was one of the reasons I got involved.”

If a new trial is granted, Pepper expects to call Rhodes-Hughes to the stand. "

No rational person can argue with it ...

"1. In reactors 1, 2 and 3, complete core meltdowns have occurred. Japanese authorities have admitted the possibility that the fuel may have melted through the bottom of the reactor core vessels. It is speculated that this might lead to unintended criticality (resumption of the chain reaction) or a powerful steam explosion – either event could lead to major new releases of radioactivity into the environment.

2. Reactors 1 and 3 are sites of particularly intense penetrating radiation, making those areas unapproachable. As a result, reinforcement repairs have not yet been done since the Fukushima accident. The ability of these structures to withstand a strong aftershock earthquake is uncertain.

3. The temporary cooling pipes installed in each of the crippled reactors pass through rubble and debris.

They are unprotected and highly vulnerable to damage. This could lead to a failure of some cooling systems, causing overheating of the fuel, further fuel damage with radioactive releases, additional hydrogen gas explosions, possibly even a zirconium fire and fuel melting within the spent fuel pools.

4. Reactor No. 4 building and its frame are serious damaged. The spent fuel pool in Unit 4, with a total weight of 1,670 tons, is suspended 100 feet (30 meters) above ground, beside a wall which is bulging outward.

If this pool collapses or drains, the resulting blast of penetrating radiation will shut down the entire area. At the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power station, the spent fuel pools alone contain an amount of cesium-137 that is 85 times greater than at Chernobyl.

Any of these occurrences could have major consequences for the entire Fukushima Dai-ichi area."

The sad thing about all this is, despite the criticisms, the article does contain in it reasonables solutions to many of the larger issues at play. Indeed, they were the central electoral platform for one of the candidates in the 2008 US Presidential Election.

They were just never followed up on.

How fresh is that orange juice?

Inquiring minds like this one want to know -

http://www.cbc.ca/books/2012/06/how-natural-is-your-orange-juice.html

""Tropicana orange juice is a pasteurized orange juice, and what they do is they store this juice, which is a full strength juice, in these million-gallon aseptic storage tanks for upwards of a year," Hamilton (that would be Alissa Hamilton, author of Squeezed: What You Don't Know About Orange Juice) told Calgary's Eyeopener. "And when the juice goes into the tanks, it's stripped of oxygen so it doesn't go bad in the tanks. However, when they strip the juice of the oxygen, they're also stripping it of the flavour-providing chemicals that are natural to the juice. So what companies such as Tropicana do is they hire flavour and fragrance companies, the same ones that make high-end perfumes and cologne, to engineer flavour packs to add back to the juice to make it taste fresh."

Belated, but good news for the US State of Washington

"King County Courthouse this morning: Superior Court Judge Bruce Heller has just ruled that Tim Eyman’s I-1053 – the third in a series of initiatives undemocratically requiring two-thirds votes of both houses of the Legislature to raise revenue – is unconstitutional on multiple grounds."

More here - http://www.nwprogressive.org/weblog/2012/05/breaking-tim-eymans-i-1053-has-finally-been-struck-down-as-unconstitutional.html

Another prize bit -

"Governor Chris Gregoire has yet to issue a statement commenting on today’s ruling. However, we’re guessing that she is happy with it, given her past opposition to I-960 and I-1053, and her active interest in this case.

(The governor was independently represented by her own counsel during oral argument; her attorney urged Judge Heller to reject Attorney General Rob McKenna’s argument that the case should not be heard).

McKenna, for his part, wasted no time in announcing that he would be appealing the decision to the Supreme Court.

“We thank Superior Court Judge Heller for his thoughtful consideration of this matter,” McKenna said. “However, we will appeal this decision because we believe these voter-enacted laws are constitutional, and we are determined to defend the will of the voters, just as we defend laws passed by the Legislature.”

Who exactly is McKenna talking about when he says “we”? Who is he speaking for? Certainly not Governor Gregoire or legislative leadership – they believe I-1053 to be unconstitutional. Is McKenna thinking of his buddy Tim Eyman, the sponsor of I-1053, who was once his client? (For those who don’t know, prior to becoming Attorney General, Rob McKenna co-wrote Tim Eyman’s Initiative 747 in 2001. It was later struck down by the Supreme Court in 2007 as unconstitutional)."

I don't know how this show is going to do ...

Anyways back to the article -

Does India really think it's a good idea to kow-tow to a screwed-up way-of-life that only benefits the American Establishment interests, and no one elses?

Time will tell ...

Oh look who they're funding.

Occurrences on the bus yesterday.

A group of people were standing waiting for a particular bus, including a elderly woman with a cane, and father and his young son, a single guy, and a married woman (i.e under 40). When what appeared to be their bus arrived, the men stepped aside to let the woman with the cane get on first.
But did she?

No. Instead the married woman brushed her aside and got on when the door opened. And this happened while someone in the bus, was still paying. And it's not like there weren't seats available, I observed you could fit a whole town in there.

Eventually the woman with cane got on, and so did everyone else.

But wait, I can top that.

When my bus arrived (I was the only one that got on), the bus seats were filled. There were a couple of people standing and I couldn't get by, so I stood at the front. All the people sitting at the front were female.

Eventually one of them got up and got off at a stop and I sat down in the empty seat. Wow, the looks of scorn from the remaining women was immense but otherwise not worth the time.

A bit later in the ride an elderly man got on the bus. But did any of those woman bother to give up their seat? No.

But I did. And I moved on to the back because frankly I'd proven to myself that I could tolerate the stench of feigned moral superiority from those females. I didn't need to prove it any longer.

And I learned something - about these particular women (both on my trip, and the one I observed at the stop) - They simply felt they were morally superior to any man, or really anyone in particular.

And ... I learned something else - something about why people consider themselves morally superior to everyone around them

People who usually believe themselves better than everyone around them do so because they are almost always never held accountable for their actions (or in this case lack thereof).

I'm not saying all woman are like that, or that somehow I'm better then them, or other people for that matter - because I'm not.

But one thing I can be sure of - yesterday, I let that person sit down because they needed to and it was the right thing to do.
