Canada - the continuing movement to the right.

http://the-mound-of-sound.blogspot.com/2011/04/shades-of-grey.html

It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

But this guy hits it on the head.

Canadians are pretty much where Americans were about 15 years ago. That is, they think that because a Center-Right party has been in power for a long time, that as an opportunity for 'change' voters are either so tuned out they don't bother to vote, or worse, those that do vote think moving the country right-ward is the answer.

Of course the establishment knows this. They know it's best to marginalize as many people as possible with stupid useless things like network television and other idiotic things like manufactured media events (e.g. two marrying, that people think deserve attention because they are called royalty), or better still, pump up the media so full of conservative bullshit that enough people would be foolish enough to vote in their direction.

Alas, this was the last six years of the Clinton Administration, and the W times. Whether the nation, and perhaps the world recovers from the disaster of having right-wing in complete control of governement, industry and military is a question only those who must live out the future to answer.

What does this have to do with Canada?

There's a federal election coming up.

And despite the advice I gave, people have largely ignored it. The right wing (in the form of the post Reform Party known as the Conservative Party) is likely going to walk away with either another minority government, or worse, a majority government, thanks to the effective siphoning of votes in Ontario to the right, and votes in Quebec to the Bloqheads, while the rest of the left-wing is effectively split between the wanna-bes, and the weaklings.

Nevermind that these people have no business running government. Forget the past 5 years, just look at their behavior since the election was called. The vast majority of those controversies in that link are from the Conservative Party. What does that tell you?

While it's nice that a Canadian team remains in the NHL playoffs and stands the best chance of returning the cup back to where it belongs, ignoring all else isn't very smart.

Sigh - sometimes I just don't think people learn, if ever.

Sholay - Mehbooba Mehbooba

All this time I've watched this film and performed this song on stage, and I had no idea it was actually sung by R.D. Burman himself (the film's musical director):

Watch and enjoy !

Assholes

Somewhere along the way in life, I’ve learned something.

I’ve learned I don’t like people who act like assholes. There's something about being treated like shit in that I don't tolerate it. But that leads to a dilemma (more on that below).

Case in point, this weekend –

As someone who’s about to enter middle age and is perhaps starting to look it, I’m somewhat vain now about my appearance. And while I admit I never considered myself the most good-looking person in the world, in my mind, there were parts of me that made me feel good about myself. Now as I’m getting older, those parts of me are no longer looking very appealing – or rather they haven’t been for quite some time.

And while it’s nice to know that some people can ‘accept’ one for aging, it’s hard at times to come to terms with the idea that I'm never going to look as I once did. While in time I can probably accept what I'll turn into over time, the fact is, I have no real choice.

Where am I going with all this?

Perhaps it’s the day and age of the Internet that allows some people to be bigger assholes today than say perhaps when I was younger. But to the point –

I’m quite paranoid about people taking my picture – why? Because I think regardless of one’s age, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to want to have pictures that don’t show oneself in the most flattering light broadcast on the Internet for the whole world to see.

Some people just don’t get this.

Some people just don’t accept this.

The former are stupid. The latter are idiots. The various combinations I call stupidiots, which is basically another word for asshole.

On a recent excursion, I encountered a person who was continually in my face with a camera, trying to take pictures of me. This person would harass me into smiling for a picture and has done so for quite some time. When I refused, the person promptly began harassing me by taking candid pictures of me. One such picture was with my back turned (literally). When I turned around, another flash of the bulb.

And the best part of all this was the exclamation by this person after the last picture - "priceless!"

Suddenly the bells of recognition went off in my head. I've heard this all before.

I've heard this from someone else in my life who acted in a similar fashion - which is how I know to spot someone being an asshole.

Needless to say, I wasn’t amused. Within 24 hours, such unflattering pictures have now found their way onto everyone's favorite new portal to the Internet.

It's one thing to age and look a certain way only to have people around you see you as you are. I'm under no illusion of how I look, but it's quite another when just about every action you take (did I mention my back was turned?) is caught on camera and put online.

Yeah, this person knew what they were doing. They simply didn't care about my wishes. They seemed to enjoy walking all over my feelings, and in front of my family.

I find that disrespectful to me. I also don't want my kids to get it in their heads that it's either okay to treat someone that way, or that one should accept that when being treated that way by someone. That's bullshit and neither one is acceptable to me.

And, when you try to speak to them as one adult to another, and ask them to respect your wishes, only for their actions to essentially be a 'whateves - fuck you, i dont care what you want', what else is there to do?

Once again -

Some people just don’t get this.

Some people just don’t accept this.

The former are stupid. The latter are idiots. The various combinations I call stupidiots.

...

The thing is, one can spend every effort avoiding them, every effort trying to educate oneself on how to spot them. But is that the answer?

Yes.

Sure, there are assholes everyone in life - at some point one has to learn to deal with them- right?

Maybe I shouldn't be so 'sensitive' - as some have suggested. And, it gets more complicated when their lives are interwoven with aspects of your life, right?

Wrong - such people can fuck off.

Sure it's important to be a grown-up and act like one, even in the face of humiliation. People like that can choose to live their lives as they choose, until it affects me and my ability to take care of my family. You do your best to deal with them in a responsible manner, but if it screws with your life, you have to put your life and your health and well-being first.

In other words, don't be an asshole to yourself by allowing someone else to treat you like shit. That's something important I'd want my kids to learn.

I suspect this person probably wouldn't like someone like me constantly being in their business repeatedly taking pictures of them in their most candid, only to then publish all of it for the online world to view at their leisure, without any context.

In any case, going forward I'm going to take steps to ensure this person doesn't get the chance to do this to me again, or do so in front my family.

Be polite and be grown-up about it, but always stand up for yourself. In the end, who else will?

Hollywood hasn't run out of ideas you say?

Then you are a fucking idiot.

Seriously - is this even necessary?

Colin Farrell?
Jessica Biel?
Kate Beckinsale?

I'll say this though - Watching a remake of this movie would be a case of confusing delusion with reality, especially with the amount of supposed work that's been done on those last two.

Another common element the US and the USSR will eventually have ...

... an inevitable decline.

http://www.hipfishmonthly.com/2011/04/our-warped-priorities/

The rights of an individual person to exist, grow and pursue the American Dream in society with rights is a thing of the past.

And while many speak of the US today as an empire, Berk asserts the conditions as something otherwise -

First, other countries like India, China and Indonesia, created industrial economies with very low labor costs, inducing American corporations to outsource factory production to those low cost venues. This was accompanied by intensive lobbying for a free trade regimen which would ultimately make it impossible for American based industry to compete with more cheaply made foreign goods. Thus we witness the rapid de-industrialization of America. In some respects we are returning to what we were as a group of colonies, a provider of raw materials, like timber, to other economies that manufacture finished items they sell back to Americans.

But the majority of Americans no longer have the industrial jobs that pay them a living wage and enable them to enjoy a higher standard of living. They no longer have the ability to consume on postwar levels. At the same time, goods are becoming more expensive with the rise of the cost of scarcer fossil fuels. Education, the greatest means of personal advancement, has become more and more expensive as government has withdrawn support for it. Also medical costs, due to expensive high tech treatments, are skyrocketing, and government does little to provide relief. Yet the federal budget is at an all time high, because we insist on spending over seven hundred billion dollars a year on wars and militarism.
Collective will to act - as long as Americans are focused on "The Voice", Twilight, and endless crap from places like Disney - may come now too little too late.

Rumsfeld - what we never knew, and what's missing.

Some time back I was going to comment on this article, and the following -
  • How the article screws up Israel - Jordan thing (airspace)
  • How the article misses the relationship between Dick Cheney and Rumsfeld, and how this shaped the relationship with W during the Bush years. This is a key flaw in the article.
But frankly, why bother now, when have someone out there to correct the record on Donald Rumsfeld and expose him as the criminally stupid asshole that he is?

That someone is Donald Rumsfeld.

Behold -

More Pentagon Papers Donald Rumsfeld Doesn't Want You to See

Here's the really sad part for all of us - like Bush and Cheney, this guy will very likely never get prosecuted for what he's done. I already regarded him a complete failure back on September 11, 2001, for failing to protect America (He was after all the nation's Secretary of Defense - why didn't he defend?). And as this commenter points out, he was a loon from long ago -
Rummy never really left the world as it was with him and Jerry Ford. He thought, or what passes for thinking, that it was still 1974, with him and The Dick running the American Imperialist show. How stupid was Jerry to have used Rummy and The Dick to run things? I'll tell you. He was George W. Bush stupid.
But somehow, his abject stupidity, along with Bush and Cheney have truly fucked up the country and much of the world for many years to come. I have some serious doubts about whether some aspects can ever be set right again.

I don't know if I should be honored that someone chose to target me and this blog, or that I've looped in with other sites as well.

Anyways it looks like the reply went nowhere, so perhaps they've moved on to other opportunities.

Fucking up the planet, one vote and one action at a time.

Don't you just love how the right-wing continues to try and deny the rest of civilization the chance to actually do something about global warming?

Now they want to shut down the US government.

Don't these idiots ever learn from their mistakes?

Or maybe it's that things are so fucked up now, that it doesn't really matter whether it's a Democrat or Republican in the White House? That may be so to many, but there are more important things to argue over.

In any case, this is what happens when stupid people are allowed to have power in society - they shit all over everything and leave a mess so bad, no one can clean it up.

Oh how I wish I was a drummer.

Here's my latest obsession -

http://www.rinki.net/pekka/monkey/

Seriously, this makes me wanna play drums.

"Medicare Phase-out legislation"

More Josh Marshall -
Now, by any reasonable standard, that's getting rid of Medicare. Abolishing Medicare. Phasing it out. Whatever you want to call it. Medicare is this single payer program that guarantees seniors health care, as noted above. Ryan's plan pushes seniors into the private markets and give them a voucher. That's called getting rid of the program. There's simply no ifs or caveats about. That's not cuts or slowing of the growth. That's abolishing the whole program. Saying anything else is a lie.

Anyone remember Afghanistan?

http://thinkprogress.org/2011/04/02/592-american-died-afghanistan/

592 more Americans won't be coming home to their families, at least alive.

And no one seems to care about it, about what America is doing there, how many lives are being destroyed over there.
