Think testing software isn't exciting or that it never cause controversy?

Think again.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/draeger-breathalyzer-breath-test-convictions/

In order to produce a result, the Alcotest 9510 uses two sensors to measure alcohol content in a breath sample: An infrared beam that measures how much light goes through the breath, and a fuel cell that measures the electrical current of the sample. The results should be about the same and within a small margin of error -- usually within a thousandth of a decimal point. If the results are too far apart, the test will be rejected.
But the report said that under some conditions the breathalyzer can return an inflated reading -- a result that could also push a person over the legal limit.

Looks who got tax repealed in Seattle?

Scamazon and Starbucks.

How? By acting like the NRA apparently.

Goodbye Time Warner ....

... hello WarnerMedia - a division of AT&T.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WarnerMedia#Acquisition_by_AT&T

On June 12, 2018, District Judge Richard J. Leon ruled in favor of AT&T, thus allowing the acquisition to go ahead with no conditions or remedies. Leon argued that the Department of Justice provided insufficient evidence that the proposed transaction would result in lessened competition. He also warned the government that attempting to obtain an appeal or stay on the ruling would be manifest unjust, as it would cause "certain irreparable harm to the defendants".[101][102][103][104]
Two days later (June 14), AT&T announced that it had closed the acquisition deal on Time Warner, making it as the former's subsidiary and division. Jeff Bewkes stepped down as CEO of Time Warner while retaining ties with the company as senior advisor of its parent company AT&T. John Stankey, which headed the AT&T/Time Warner integration team, took over as CEO. It was also announced that the Time Warner brand would be dropped in favor of the name WarnerMedia.[105][106] As a result of the structure of the merger, Time Warner Inc. became a limited liability company with the legal name Warner Media, LLC.[107]

Why I refuse to support that establishment-controlled duopoly that has a stranglehold on US Democracy and threatens human civilization in general.

The so-called “John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019”, which passed the Senate 85-10 Monday after having been approved by the House of Representatives in May, allocates $716 billion for the Defense Department, an increase of $82 billion.
This increase alone is larger than the total budget of the Department of Education, approximately $70 billion. It is also larger than the annual military budget of Russia ($61 billion). The increase in Pentagon spending between 2017 and 2019, $165 billion, is larger than the entire defense budget of China.

Hmm ... who exploits children more ... large corporations like Nestle, or the US Government?

You decide.

Well at least the US Supreme Court made one smart decision.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/supreme-court-search-warrant-cell-location-records/?ftag=TREc64629f&bhid=21455359243242794221985792139624

"The Supreme Court has said that law enforcement must first seek a warrant before obtaining historical cell phone location records from phone companies, upending a near-decade long practice by police.
The court ruled 5-4 on the case, in what became one of the most awaited privacy legal decisions in the US this year."

An interesting point of life.

Yesterday, my eldest child finished elementary school. It was certainly different from when I was in school.

Perhaps it's because I hated school a great deal - I always have. I hated being somewhere I didn't want to be, to interact with an oftentimes older grump of a white woman who often would bully the kids simply because she could. Granted that's not entirely accurate - sometimes the teachers were younger, sometimes they were Asian, sometimes they were men.

But I hated it. And overall I was glad it was done.

But it was more than that.

I hated being around assholes and jerk kids. There was always some bully around, and while I myself was never bullied or harassed - I didn't like being around it. I also do not consider myself a bully or harasser, but found myself around friends who did and who encouraged that tendency - something I found I didn't really like.

Maybe it was that I was a brown boy surrounded by largely white kids? I was never popular nor much of an athlete. Indeed, the only times I ever felt good at school was when I did well in class.

How things have changed I would guess.

My eldest was very sad to leave school yesterday. I think in a lot of ways the changes may have been for the better. Kids are still kids, and teachers are still teachers, but there are a lot more kids different racial backgrounds, and often times, multi-racial ones. Harassment still exists, but it's frowned upon, and bullying is something that as far as I know isn't tolerated.

Still a day has come and past. I'm happy my eldest has reached this point in their life. Hopefully in time they'll realize that there's so much more to come in life, and it's all in front.

Ah - to be 12 again.

Happy (belated) Empire Day.

https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/06/15/the-day-the-us-became-an-empire/

"The US ought to have its own Empire Day and it should be on June 15.  It was on June 15, 1898 that the US became an empire.  On that day, the US House of Representatives voted 209 to 91 to annex Hawaii.  (The US Senate followed on July 6, voting 42 to 21 in favor of annexation.)"

Always some asshole.

Think because they drive an expensive car they are entitled to violate driving laws.

ORGANIC material on Mars?

Certified Organic by NASA!!

https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-finds-ancient-organic-material-mysterious-methane-on-mars

NASA’s Curiosity rover has found new evidence preserved in rocks on Mars that suggests the planet could have supported ancient life, as well as new evidence in the Martian atmosphere that relates to the search for current life on the Red Planet. While not necessarily evidence of life itself, these findings are a good sign for future missions exploring the planet’s surface and subsurface.

Lovely excursion to Kubota Garden

Well look who finally won the Stanley Cup.

The Washington Capitals.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_Stanley_Cup_Finals

The 2018 Stanley Cup Finals was the championship series of the National Hockey League (NHL)'s 2017–18 season, and the culmination of the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs. The Eastern Conference champion Washington Capitals defeated the Western Conference champion Vegas Golden Knights four games to one to win their first championship in their 44th season. The Vegas Golden Knights made the Finals in their first season.

Congrats to Vegas too - first expansion team to make it to the finals in their first season.

Now if only a Canadian team could win - that hasn't happened since 1993.

The goal of MeToo?

Simple - https://www.wsws.org/en/articles/2018/06/07/chap-j07.html

"The principal product of the ongoing wave of sexual harassment accusations has been the further undermining of elementary democratic rights in the US, including the presumption of innocence and due process, the legal obligation of the prosecution to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt."

Look no further than Charlie Chaplin.

The Great March of Return in Gaza has done something no prior event has ever done.

From this moment forward, I equate Zionism with Apartheid and Jim Crow.

https://www.counterpunch.org/2018/06/04/sacrificing-gaza-the-great-march-of-zionist-hypocrisy/

Why?

"They cannot allow a single Gazan to cross the boundary. They know it would be a fatal blow to their colonial-supremacist hubris, and the beginning of the end of Zionism—just as Southern segregationists knew that allowing a single black child into the school was going to be the beginning of the end of Jim Crow. Palestinians gaining their basic human rights means Israeli Jews losing their special colonial privileges."

Defying the US and the right-wing Establishment ...

... it can be done.

Wonder what the consequences will be ... or perhaps the voters in Venezuela knew that those are really inconsequential to surrendering their destiny to the right-wing?
