"Opinion polls showed a lead for the Conservatives throughout the campaign. Ultimately, the Conservatives gained 47 seats while Labour lost 59 seats, resulting in a Conservative majority of about 80 seats. Due to Labour's significant losses, Corbyn announced his resignation as the party's leader.[3][4] Liberal Democrat leader Jo Swinson narrowly lost her own seat, with the party winning only 11 seats despite polling nearly 12% of the vote. Swinson announced her resignation as well.[5] The Conservatives performed very well in Northern England and across the Midlands, winning a large number of seats in that region including the constituency of former Prime Minister Tony Blair.[6]"
