In the United States, there isn't a democracy. Sure, there are 'elections', but that's really about the rich and powerful picking their middle management for the next couple of years. 'Democrat' and 'Republican' don't have any real meaning to the public otherwise.

They do serve a performative purpose - to maintain the illusion that the US is a democracy.
