... can she and her manufactured Buffy Sainte-Marie persona actually face any accountabilities and responsibilities for the lies she fabricated, and all the wealth she accrued posing as a brown Indigenous woman from Canada?
I doubt it. And honestly all these awards and accolades being taken away now, is just the music industry trying to save itself.
Rising to prominence during the 1960s, Sainte-Marie’s music and social activism
often focused on issues faced by First Nations and Indigenous people in
Canada and the United States. She sang about the historical oppression
of these groups and the challenges faced in their communities in the
modern age.
At the time, the singer claimed an Indigenous
Canadian identity and ancestry, but that has since been disputed. During
a 2023 investigation by CBC News, it was found that the folk singer was
born in the United States and is of European descent – namely, English
and Italian.
Whatever these industries take back from her - it's not enough, and never will be.
