In some cultures, it's Valentine's Day ...

... in others, today marks the beginning of the Arab Spring.

2011 – A "Day of Rage" (pictured) marked the beginning of the Bahraini uprising, part of the Arab Spring.

Timeline

Protests began on 14 February 2011, but met immediate reaction from security forces. Over thirty protesters were reportedly injured and one was killed as Bahraini government forces used tear gas, rubber bullets and Birdshot to break up demonstrations, but protests continued into the evening, drawing several hundred participants.[83] Most of the protesters were Shia Muslims, who make up the majority of Bahrain's population.[28][84] The next day, one person attending the funeral of the protester killed on 14 February was shot dead and 25 more were hurt when security officers opened fire on mourners.[85][86] The same day, thousands of protesters marched to the Pearl Roundabout in Manama and occupied it, setting up protest tents and camping out overnight.[87][88] Sunni activist Mohamed Albuflasa was secretly arrested by security forces after addressing the crowd,[89][90] making him the first political prisoner of the uprising.[91]
